Former 16-year NFL linebacker Bill Romanowski is in the spotlight again — for the wrong reason.
The four-time Super Bowl champion and his wife filed for bankruptcy Monday, according to court files obtained by USA TODAY, a day before a civil case with the U.S. Department of Justice for alleged unpaid taxes was set to begin.
U.S. attorneys allege Romanowski’s nutrition company was used to evade taxes. Now, it owes more than $15.5 million.
According to USA TODAY, DOJ lawyers allege that Romanowski and his wife Julie did not pay income taxes from 1998-2007.
In attempts to avoid reporting federal income and repaying those taxes, the couple then used money from Nutrition53, the nutritional supplement company they founded, to pay for personal expenses and those of their two children, government lawyers say.
Romanowski won two championships apiece with the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos. In the middle of those tenures, he played two years (1994-95) with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he finished his career with the Raiders. Romanowski admitted in retirement to using steroids throughout a career in which he totaled 1,118 tackles and 39.5 sacks.
